A typical example of Procidan architecture,
the Casali are different to the dwellings found
along the other marines.
Generally found in agricultural zones, the Casali
are a hamlet of homes grouped around a court yard
or lane which represent the first urban settlements
constructed outside the stronghold of Terra Murata
around the 16th Century, when the Saracen invasions
became less frequent.
These houses lean one against the other on three
levels, adorned with arches, balconies and external
stairs leading to higher levels. The external
stairs and arches, a remarkable example of collective
architecture, are distinguished by a typical economy
of space, with dwellings which flank each other,
side by side and one on top of the other.
